Preston Lee Forchion, Sr.
July 14, 1940 – December 11, 2024
Preston Lee Forchion, Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on July 14, 1940, in Moorestown, NJ, Preston was the son of Murtha Bernice Forchion (née Meekins) and William Dandridge Forchion, Jr., and one of six cherished brothers. He was predeceased by his brothers William and Richard, who remain lovingly remembered in his heart and the hearts of his family.
Preston graduated from Overbrook Regional High School in 1958 and soon after joined the National Guard, transitioning to the Regular Army. As a heavy vehicle mechanic, Preston proudly served his country, with his basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and his permanent station at Coleman Barracks in Mannheim, Germany. In 1962, he married the love of his life, Eva Mitchell, and together they built a life filled with love and purpose. Honorably discharged from the Army in 1963, Preston and Eva settled in Hammonton, NJ, where they raised their three children: Preston L. Forchion, II, Carla Lindsey, and Djeli Celestia (Sara).
Preston had a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys. He adored his horse, Courtin, and often delighted family and friends with buggy rides through Hammonton. His love of cars was a lifelong passion, and he always seemed to have an old car nearby, whether it was a classic Cadillac, a convertible Buick, or a Volkswagen.
For many summers, Preston and Eva ran Eden Day Camp, a vibrant and nurturing haven for children to explore, play, and grow during their summer breaks. Their dedication to creating memorable experiences for others reflected their generous spirits and commitment to community.
Preston’s voice was unforgettable—a deep and resonant baritone that could fill a room and touch hearts. He sang with joy and pride, performing in various groups and events throughout his life. Whether he was invited to sing the national anthem at opening ceremonies or Ave Maria at weddings, his voice left an indelible mark on all who heard him.
After the passing of his beloved wife Eva in 2018, Preston continued to find joy in his family, music, and the companionship of his dear friend Joanne Butler. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and a life well-lived.
Preston is survived by his children: Preston (Maribel), Carla (Donald), and Djeli (Sara); his grandchildren: Jackie, Donald Jr., Garrett, Michael, Kyle, Gabriella (his Doctor), Zebulon, Preston III, Quinlan, Evalina, and his great-granddaughter, Jordan. He is also survived by his brothers: Merriel, Robert (Mamie [Cissy]), and Raymond (Loretta). Additionally, he is survived by his sisters-in-law, Joyce Forchion, Ruth King, and Loretta Harris; brothers-in-law, Charles Mitchell and Esaw Mitchell; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered their support, love, and compassion during Preston’s recent condition.
In honoring his memory, we celebrate a man who lived with passion, loved without measure, and left a legacy of kindness, joy, and unforgettable melodies.
Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service Friday, December 27th at 11:00 am at the Green Grove Baptist Church, 240 Cushman Avenue, West Berlin.
