Margaret Mary “Margie” Carr
(nee D’Angelo) was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania along with her sister, Catherine “Cass” (Cianci) to their parents Edward and Catherine (nee Tierney) D’Angelo. She attended Good Shepherd grammar school and West Catholic Girls’ High School, graduating in 1951. She met her husband, John “Jack” Carr, an honorably discharged Navy veteran of the Korean war, in 1955. They married on April 27, 1957 at Good Shepherd Church in West Philadelphia and remained so for 63 years until her passing.
The center of Margie’s world was her family. As a proud wife and mother, raising six children, beginning in Philadelphia, she eventually settled the family into their home in Turnersville, New Jersey in 1966. There, she made the house a welcome home, bringing friends and family together for any excuse to celebrate, share laughs, and dance (her favorite).
Best known as “Mom”, “Mom-Mom”, and “Aunt Margie” to her large extended family, including 15 grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, extending well beyond the friends of their friends and hers. Her home in Turnersville was the center of the universe to all, eventually moving to Margate, New Jersey near the beach where she always dreamed of living. There was always enough food in the fridge, room at the table, and place to sleep for any and all who entered her home. If you were connected in any way to this extended clan, chances are, she fed you at least once.
She was a devout Catholic who truly lived and practiced her faith. She was an active volunteer at St. Jude’s Elementary School, the Altar and Rosary Society, and as a pro-life advocate, organizing and attending pro-life rallies in Washington, DC yearly. She also became the Director of Birthright of Atlantic County during her retirement. Her strong sense of faith and determination to stand up for her beliefs instilled values in her children that have passed on to her grandchildren.
She was survived by her loving husband, Jack, who remained by her side until her passing, her sister, Cass, and her sister-in-law, Margaret “Peg” Carr. As well, she was survived by all of her six children: Kathleen Mahmoud (Aladdin), John (Kathy), Kevin (Yuliya), Margaret (Rich), Paul (Jackie), Christopher, and Alison (daughter-in-law). And further by her 15 grandchildren: Kevin, Amira Mahmoud, Ryan (Meghan), Nina, Emily Matthias (Matthew), Dean Mahmoud, Shannon Silhol, Monica Silhol, Daniel, Bridget Silhol, Kathleen “Katie”, Trevor, John “Sean”, Aiden, and Michael.
Margie’s life will be honored and remembered privately by her family due to the health care crisis of COVID-19. Margie’s life will be celebrated at a later date with family and friends.
