Joe was devoted to Barb, his “bride” of 68 years, never failing to tell people how much he loved her and credited her for the way she raised their children. He loved and was so proud of his six children, Joseph (Cathy), Michael, Patty Banks (Bob), Susan Griffis (John), Barbara Siravo (Al), and Timothy (Patti) and his close-knit family that included 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

The U.S. Navy was an important influence in his life, and he treasured his years of service to his country. Stationed on aircraft carriers, he achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer and was honorably discharged after 20+ years.

He was a Mummer for 75 years, performing with the Downtowners Fancy Brigade for 58 years. He was honored to receive an award when he became the first member of the Downtowners to be active for 50 consecutive years.

He was a dedicated volunteer at the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial and enjoyed giving knowledgeable tours of the majestic battleship, just as he enjoyed being an early-Mass greeter for many years at St. Charles Borromeo Church. No description of Joseph Boyle would be complete without saying that he was an avid Eagles fan.

Often called “Chief,” Joseph Boyle will be remembered for love of his family, his country and his church.

Joseph’s life will be honored and remembered privately by his family due to the health crises of COVID-19. Joseph’s life will be celebrated at a later date with family and friends.

Joseph used these words so often, “Have a great day and fly the Flag.”

My condolences to the Boyle family.

Although Joe and I only had brief encounters we always managed to share a tale or two of our Navy days. My deepest sympathy to the family and know that Joe will always have Fair Winds and Following Seas.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Barbara and the entire Boyle family. Our daughter and her family live next door to the Boyles. Every time we saw Joe, he always had a friendly smile and a pleasant conversation with us. It was an honor to get to know him over the years. He was a great man who surely will be missed. .

We have been Mr. Boyle 's neighbor for the past nineteen years. From the first day we moved in, Mr. Boyle greeted us with a smile and a short conversation about how our day was going. He took an interest in us and our children, taking the time to get to know our likes and interests. My son will always cherish the times showing Mr. Boyle all his newest basketball moves. Mr. Boyle was kind, compassionate, helpful, and giving. It was an honor to known Mr. Boyle. We will miss him dearly!

We have had the privilege of knowing Joe (chief) for over 40 years. He was always a true gentleman. He will be sadly missed by us. We shared many memories with the Downtowners. Barb and Kids What an amazing husband and dad you had. I truly loved him! We had so many great times and I have so many fond memories over the years. He was truly a Great American Hero, You both sacrificed so much for this country and Joe always spoke so lovingly of all of you. Barb - he couldn't say enough about what a wonderful wife you are as well as the most amazing mother and he was so proud of the family you two have built and of each of his children. He will always be loved and remembered in the hearts of those at Navy Lakehurst and throughout the US Navy, not to mention the Downtowners Mummers and the Battle Ship New Jersey family that he dedicated so much of his life to. Barb, Patty, and family. I am so saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. What a wonderful man! I am lucky to call him my friend and to have had the privilege to have worked with him and enjoy our retirement lunches with the gang. So many memories. No doubt heaven is a better place now. To say that I will miss you is by far a sad statement. At a time when your friendship and support is much needed, I find myself with a broken heart. Only you and I know what we meant to each other. The many times and memories we shared were not sea stories but actual facts from us who had so much in common. We spoke often of the Navy and the Air Force and Malvern ( Prosit ). New Years mornings will be different as we remembered many of our lost friends. You will be remembered forever in my heart. A great neighbor he would always check on myself and my wife to make sure all was well. He would often joke with me as I served in the Air Force saying well what do you expect from the Air Force. He will be so missed as a great person is to be admired. A great father and husband.
