Brown
Carl “Lew” of Turnersville, NJ.
On September 15, 2014 of Washington Twp. Age 91.
Lew was born September 9, 1923 in Greenville, Pa. He was the son of Carl C. and Alice (nee Henry) Brown. He came to Meadville, Pa in 1930. He graduated Meadville High School 1941. He married Patricia (nee Lalor) on August 14, 1948. She died October 12, 1999 after 51 years of marriage. He worked at the Keystone Brass Co. formerly Talon, Inc. in Erie, Pa. One of his many achievements was installing a new IBM department.
He later joined the Owens-Illinois Inc. Glass Co. in Vineland, NJ as a Data Processing Supervisor where he retired in 1985 as a Payroll Manager after 31 years of service.
His pride and joy were his family.
Carl enjoyed traveling, sports, hunting, playing golf, & fishing. He was especially proud of his 60 year membership in “Lower Sheriff Lodge”, which is a hunting and fishing camp. He belonged to the lodge along with his close friends: Bill Sherry, Bernie Williams, Bill Hall, Chuck Lawrence, Don Redmond, Judd Smith, and Norbert Stainbrook. Friends of Lower Sheriff included Ben McGill and Bill Merschbaker.
Carl was a veteran of World War II with the rank of Tech/Sergeant. He was a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B-24 Heavy Bomber in the U.S. Army 8th Air Force European Theater with 30 combat missions, one of which was D-Day on June 6, 1944.
He was awarded several decorations including the “Distinguished Flying Cross”. Lew also served in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater, flying gasoline and supplies to China over the Hymalaya Mountains (The Famous Hump).
He is survived by a son, Douglas of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and his daughter in law, Mona; His daughter, Kathleen Mary Alken and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Alken of Voorhees, NJ.; sister, Pearl VaRee and her husband, Donald of Charlotte, NC.; four Grandchildren, Max and Lucy Kim-Brown, Amy and Mark Allen and several nieces and nephews, who he adored.
In addition to his parents and wife, Patricia, he was pre-deceased by a brother, R. Duane Brown and a sister-in-law, Audrey (nee Oster) Brown.
In the words of his family:
He was a wonderful Man who lived his life with care, respect, wisdom, kindness and love. He was a source of comfort and joy to so many. His love of nature and enjoyment of simple pleasures drew people to him.
He is deeply missed, and his passing leaves a huge hole. Fortunately, the hole can be filled with countless happy memories from a long life well lived.
Funeral services and interment at Greendale Cemetery will be at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lew’s memory may be made to Alice and Carl Brown at Hillside Home, 535 William Road, Meadville, Pa. or Emmanuel Church of Christ, 30 Park Avenue, Meadville, Pa.
